Laura, a scholarship student at an elite high school in New York City, is
surrounded by superficial, backstabbing rich girls, all obsessed with having the
best “Sweet Sixteen” party. Despite the differences in lifestyles, she has a
solid group of friends, as well as a best friend, Whitney. Everything is running
smoothly until new girl, Sophie, arrives. She is extremely rich, pretty, and
fashionable. Sophie wiggles her way right into Laura's group of friends and
disrupts the equilibrium of the clique. Before long, everyone is fighting and
for once Laura can’t get them to stop. Laura is the only one who remains true to
herself and, with the help of a certain boy, learns about the importance of
friendship.
Bittersweet Sixteen was incredible! I loved the story
from page one to the last sentence. The characters were well developed; I found
my favorite character immediately. The reader will find the girl their most
like, the girl they most like, and the girl they most likely want to be. The
authors captured these self-centered teens voices perfectly, and Laura’s down to
earth “so over the riches” voice even better. Who can’t love her? Bittersweet
has a little of something for everyone that keeps you wanting more. Teens will
love everything about it. The only thing I didn’t like was that it didn’t have a
sequel. It just seems like a waste not to continue!
My favorite part of the book was the “Sweet Sixteen” parties.
