What trait does you in—brain or heart? Frannie asks herself this question when, a week before she turns fifteen, her dad dies, leaving her suddenly deprived of the only person who truly understands her. Frannie struggles to make sense of a world that no longer seems safe, a world in which one moment can turn things so thoroughly for the worse.
While cleaning out her father’s house, she discovers an elegant wooden box with an inscription: Frances Anne 1000. Inside, Frannie finds one thousand hand-painted and carved puzzle pieces. Her father never finished anything early and she wonders if he knew he was going to die. Feeling broken into pieces, Frannie slowly puts the puzzle together, bit by bit. But as she works, something remarkable begins to happen: She is catapulted into an ancient foreign landscape, a place suspended in time where she can discover her father as he was B.F.—before Frannie.
“Frannie in Pieces” was interesting and imaginative. After losing someone important to you, you would crave having more time with that person. Frannie got the next best thing, she got to see who her father was before parenthood and the responsibility that comes with it. I think this plot was extremely imaginative.
It is very difficult to describe my thoughts while reading Frannie in Pieces. I thought that the parts about the puzzle were very entertaining, but I hated how Frannie acted about the puzzle. I HATED how Frannie and her mother never really grieved when Frannie’s father died, and I hated how her mother acted like the death was no big deal and how they should get on with their lives. The parts of the story about going inside the puzzle kept me interested enough to finish the book. That and the disbelief I had about some of the outrageous things that were going on in this book. I would probably recommend this to 12-16 year olds, but I think any age can enjoy it. I would sure like to know what you think.
My favorite part of the book was when Frannie went into the puzzle.
