Getting Lucky

By: Micol Ostow

There are a million and one old sayings, and a million and two superstitions, all having to do with getting lucky, and Cass Parker knows them all. When Cass was 13 her whole world collapsed during a short period of bad luck. During that time Cass’ mother left her and her father without saying good bye. After that disaster Cass’ father moved them to Las Vegas for a clean start.
Cass’ good luck first began when Alana Mark, a leader of the Cult of Popularity, shared her Bonne Belle Lip Smackers with Cass. Ever since then she has been an A-lister. As her luck continued Cass found a boyfriend in Jesse Dain. Jesse and Cass have been dating for almost a year and Cass wants to do something special for their anniversary.
Unfortunately, Jesse had a surprise too. Cass comes home from winter break early to surprise Jesse but once she finds him he surprises her first. Jesse is caught making out with Alana, Cass’ new ex-best friend. But she won’t let this get to her. She finds new friends who like her for her and is even invited to their weekly poker game. Cass desides to join them and starts to do well, but when Jesse challenges her, will Cass get lucky?
Getting Lucky was fun to read. The story was kind of reversed from the normal romantic comedy, but I liked it that way. I found that Ostow focused more on the comedy then the romance, which is why it was fun to read. Even though this book is more comedy then romance doesn’t mean that the romance part wasn’t great too. I loved how well the final poker game was written and everything was both believable and yet had me saying “Unbelievable!”
This story was about getting what you want and getting what you deserve. I loved seeing how Alana reacts to betraying her best friend. It was just unbelievable. And I love that Cass gets what she deserves. I mean, Cass finds great, trustworthy friends, something she’s good at, and a chance for redemption. What more could a girl ask for? What more could a reader ask for?

My favorite part of the book was the final poker game.
