When going into high school the quest for popularity can be overwhelming. Outgoing Marnie, and her shy, best friend Nola, are about to join that craziness as they start the ninth grade. Marnie wants to join the “In” crowd even though Nola is fine just hanging with people like herself. Lyzette is “perfect”. When she offers Marnie a chance to be with the “In” crowd will Marnie lose her friend in the process?
Marnie wants Nola to be accepted but she doesn’t understand why Nola does not care about being popular. Marnie tries to be a good friend but can she stay that way on the road to popularity?
In or Out was fantastic. Claudia Gabel did an incredible job showing what popularity means to different teenagers. Gabel created a great voice for both Marnie and Nola, and I’m curious to see what she will do with the next book. I don’t think popularity is about being with the “In” crowd. I think it’s about having friends that care about you, and having friends that you can trust. This book left me wanting to read the rest of the series as I am curious to see if Marnie discovers that. And if she does I know everyone will love seeing her try to find that popularity. I guess we’ll have to read and see.
My favorite part of the book was Marnie's birthday party.
